Amazon isn’t cutting really any domestic jobs. They haven’t use domestic labor for customer service, returns, refunds, order inquiries etc for at least 5 years. And their AI chat has been in the works since then and now works basically perfectly. It can handle returns and refunds on even complex issues (like damaged/non-returnable items) far more quickly and with more pleasant interactions than a live person from India can handle in a much faster way. The job apocalypse in that sector happened a while ago. Now we are just getting rid of the foreigners. I’m sure they are cutting some domestic middle management. But AI isn’t really geared for those jobs. Cutting thee middle management is something all companies can and should do. We need more decentralization in corporations, less of a pyramid and more of an open field with strategically placed generals across that field. But in terms of jobs AI is replacing, namely the customer service ones, those aren’t domestic. I haven’t spoken to someone with an American accent from Amazon in years. This move will have the effect of reducing corporate demand for H1B visas, and I’m all for that.
