People believe what they want to believe.
AI hype is just automated programmatic statistics, there is no effing intelligence in it.
But it still a breakthrough, because it gives existing software engineers/architects the ability to 'programmatically inference' certain things.
That's it, doesn't sound much, but in a grand complex software architecture, that's 'forbidden gold chest'.
And that creates really powerful practical results.
Now it's still not AGI, but understand the difference.
The existing software world got 'upgraded a big deal', and that will lead to many new scientific and technological findings.
At the and, maybe sometime AGI, perhaps. But that's not the point of what's going on at the moment.
While you may dismiss that current AI, because it's not AGI, you can't dismiss that current happenings and advancements are tremendously important and fruitful.
