As a westerner in Japan I often find I am unable to use certain technology or online services because it does not cater for the possibility that my name is not Japanese. Even in Katakana sometimes there is a character limit. Plus, the computer automation means it won't ever match my passport or official registered details.
My wife had to make 7 applications to buy a pre-pay phone due to this. Her middle name is now her last name with the phone company because according to their passport scanning technology, it is impossible for a middle name to exist.
Outside of technology, there is also a lot of unconscious racial bias in Japan which affects you being able to do day-to-day things. For example, bike shop won't order a size L, because people in Japan only have S or M. At just 180cm I am over the rational size limit!
Clothing is made in different body proportions. T-shirts that fit are always too short in the torso. Jeans are designed for a shorter pelvis shape.
