I think it's probably still just really damn fancy autocomplete. But then again, so are we. The LLMs only learn with one sense, a sense we aren't born with, which is language. But we learn to autocomplete ideas with our senses. That's basically what object permanence is (actual object permanance, not the term the internet uses to describe inattentive disregard). It's that I saw that thing there. And even though it's no longer where I saw it, I know it stills exists. For the first three years of our lives, the matrices and knobs spit out "No" every day as the answer to the question "is mommy still there?" Then one day they spit yes, and they keep spitting out yes as evidence keeps confirming it. It's just the evidence they're training against isnt words. It's data from sensory organs. It's still auto complete, it's just way fancier. To wit, you, and I for that matter, and how we conceive of ourselves is only *provably* the output of our brains. If there is something else there, we haven't proven it yet. Doesn't mean there's not. Just not way to prove it.
