Working on my PhD thesis in 1987 on AI in process planning, I interviewed engineers in the automotive industry. Many said that computers or expert systems will not be able to do what they do. Today, cars are built in fully automated factories. Of course, there are still aspects of the manufacturing processes that require humans.
