While there are a lot of jobs unfilled in the blue collar trades area, I think most white collar workers are unprepared for the physical and mental realities of doing the work. It’s not a backup job anyone can do. You have to have both the aptitude and fortitude to do it. I worked for almost 2 years on a remote project that was always freezing cold, had no hot food available, and only porta johns. Being in a 125 degree attic for hours doing HVAC work is miserable. So is getting poop water in your mouth. Also, the rather condescending attitude white collar workers had over the decades the trades were getting slaughtered by automation and offshoring makes me less sympathetic and welcoming. The number of times I was doing something hard or dirty and some engineer told me "that’s why I went to college" is significant.
