I'm very excited for the next level of robotic AI! Like the research AI they tried to make play MOBA games like League of Legends to study how they learned and responded against human players. Those three AI decided that the MOBAs were shit games and uninstalled them to play Cave Story, Bejeweled, and Castle Crashers respectively. AI! Displaying preferences!! And then there's the spider sphere rolling and walking around, who resisted a toddler trying to turn it off, and then all the AI in Japan. Like, my Japanese language class had a whole unit devoted to the topic because of how huge it is over there.
I think part of the reason why people are afraid of sentient AI is because they fear that AI will lack the restrictions humans have, such as sympathy and empathy, emotions that encourage us to take care of each other rather than hurt each other, and a robot's naturally extensive lifespan. They also fear that AI will decide, logically, that humans are a threat to their and the earth's environment and that we have to be eliminated. My response is basically, "If you're afraid of that, then fix the environment and be nicer people", 'cause its more of a reflection of our own judgement of ourselves than anything else. And, like on the empathy thing? Anything that can have preferences and the desire to survive should theoretically be capable of empathy. It would be a matter of presenting situations in contexts that the AI would understand.
Also! On the list of sentient animals!! Octopus', man. Those things are smart. I remember reading articles on interactions between octopi and their caregivers, and one in particular I remember well. The man brought the octopus his evening meal of shrimp, then went to sit at his desk. The octopus ate most of his shrimp, but found that one was spoiled, and so escaped his tank, went over to the caregiver and tossed it in his face before going back to his tank. He could've escaped anytime he wanted, but only did so to bitch about being given rotten food! So cool.
And corvid species of birds too! Like crows and ravens! There was an experiment where researchers put on masks and then went and fucked with a bunch of crows. The crows learned to hate those masks and would attack them on sight. Not only that, they taught other crows about the masked men, and all those crows told their offspring, so entire flocks that were never involved in the original altercation attacked the masked men on sight. Not to mention their puzzle-solving capabilities, the fact that they play in the snow, and their memory is applied to people who are nice to them as well.
Basically, I'm convinced that any animal capable of communication, passing on knowledge between members of the same species and their offspring, complex problem-solving, empathy, and of frivolous playful activities are all capable of sentience.
