I've been thinking along similar lines, though I frame it quite differently. I'd be curious to hear what you think though. Consider the identity of things in terms of parts and wholes. When understood as wholes, everything aims at persistence. But when considered as parts, things fulfill many varieties of particular functions that support the persistence of the wholes of which they are parts. If you look at the sorts of things people say make thier lives meaningful, they're all of the general form 'being a part of something good'. There are a lot of ways to be a part, and a lot of possible things to become parts of, which is why many people feel like they choosing and creating their own subjective meaning. Why do wholes aim at persistence? Because any causal process that does not tend towards repetition, ceases to be a thing, leaving us in a world filled entirely by things (loopy causal processes) that tend towards persistence. So, the will to persist is universal (all the way down to atoms, and up to civilizations, and ideas). Humans are unique in relation to this will only insofar as it gains recursive representation within our cognitive structures. What is good? The good for any thing is whatever increases its probability of persistence. Traditional morality is a set of social rules that increase the probability of persistence of society. Health and medicine is concerned with the what is good for individual bodies.
