I think parenting and YouTube are mostly to blame for literacy rates going down. Kids imitate their parents. My parents read books and I copied them. I read books now and my son copies me and reads books. That makes a massive difference. But also when I was young, YouTube did not exist. If I wanted to learn something, I had to read. As a teenager I had internet access and could learn anything I wanted, but without YouTube? Yep, I had to read. Plus most of the information I needed just wasn't available in my native language online at the time, so I also had to learn English. Today you can watch a video about pretty much every topic and if there isn't a video in your native language, AI dubbing takes care of that for you. I still prefer reading an article or tutorial rather than watching a video on YT, but this seems to be increasingly rare.
