Selling ads and collecting data is the main goal and some subgoals would be goals that help achieve this. This might feed one of those subgoals. Dead users can't "buy" ads, or add data on the living person they are themselves, but they can help facebook do it. For the ads part: imagine someone who often posted pictures of their yard with what they were currently reading on their back porch table with captions like "Too nice of a day not to read this in the back yard." With img2img genai it could keep posting those. Then every now and then you could see a post like: *Too cold to read outside today, but thanks to this warming blanket I got from amazon, I can read \[current nytimes best seller\] with a nice backdrop.* 2 ads, way more subliminal than promoted posts. For the collecting data part, it can all be boiled down to engagement. Engagement helps reinforce the currently collected data and obviously user retention. If the algorithm know exactly who to show you and those people die, it becomes harder to keep you on the platform. Showing you new people to get you to engage with while also showing you people you already engage with is way easier than without. having people you engage with "not die" can help with the transition to new people.
