My dad is always pushing me to go to hiring events and career fairs because he assumes that attending those things will automatically boost my chances of hiring and thinks that I'm just not "knocking on enough doors" or whatever. But with the likelihood that I'll have to mask in front of strangers who are evaluating me and I have such a sparse resume with quite limited work experience and no special skills or qualifications, while competing against others for the same position who are much more credentialed and experienced than I am is so incredibly demoralizing and feels so hopeless I would gladly rather eat a bowl of broken glass and rusted nails with no milk because those things are basically psychological torture for me.
