Anyone who claims to know the answer to whether it is or isn't is full of shit. There is no known way to confirm whether anything is or isn't sentient. We can guess, but we are guessing based on a sample size of 1 and receive no feedback as to whether we're right or wrong or even close. Some people don't think fish are sentient and yet they have many biological neurons. Some people think they are. There's a scale of neurological complexity from simple worm neuron clusters all the way to human brains, and everyone has a different opinion as to where the cutoff is for sentience on that scale. But nobody has ever had any evidence that they're right or wrong beyond their feelings about it. Until we can find a way to confirm absolutely whether something is sentient, we can't ever say an AI is or isn't. Even ASI smarter than all humans combined may or may not be sentient. It could be an incredibly complex machine that feels nothing yet outperforms us in every way. In conclusion, the argument whether AI is sentient is meaningless and pointless. The only winning move is to concede that you don't know.
