About 50 years ago Hollywood may have made nearly that whole pie, and needed writers to help make it. Today things are different. In the yearly 70s, there may have been 1-2 TV screens in an average house, and maybe four or five movie screens in an average town or neighborhood. There were three main TV channels, and a few hundred movies four those movie screens. Now an average person probably has 2-3 screens, with one on them nearly all the time. So a four person household could have 10 screens instead of 2 screens. There are more than 30,000 YouTube accounts that have a million followers or more. Who knows how many YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, OnlyFans, etc. accounts that have 50,000 followers or more that streams/releases content? Even for things on streaming apps or linear TV, how much of that is reality tv, or foreign media (Squid Game comes to mind)? The content pie is much bigger than it ever was, but the part of it made by Hollywood is fairly tiny. This strike has talked about AI quite a bit, but really it’s about the changing economics of going from broadcasting mass media, to streaming niche media.
