I really value privacy but we have to consider what knots we tie to preserve it. All they really did was search his face in a public database, this is not unlike searching a name on google. Searching a name will render multiple people and the detectives do their work to find out which one if any are they looking for, same with facial search. Using AI to identify images is not a technology we should hinder with laws, rather we should be targeting the databases which hold this information. Are they sharing it without our permission? Are they holding it without our permission? If it is private information such as picture of single identifiable person (as in, a profile picture), name, address, or any other such information that even if only in aggregate can be used to identify or leverage information about a person, then the company or party holding it should have permission to do so, and doubly so for sharing it, and furthermore if it makes them money it should be licensed for it. edit: At the end of the day, data ownership should not default to those who produce it, or possess it, but by the person it is about. Any one can snap a picture of art at a museum but that does not mean they own it. Same concept can be applied to data.
