AI art is a current threat for artists because it is copying / stealing work. If the commissions of my favourite artist would be above my budget but an AI copy would be $2 so to say, then that hurts the artist because they will not have any income from commissions anymore, because why would anyone want to buy art for $50 and have to wait to get it when they can also spend $2 and get it with two button clicks?
There's full time artists out there who experience this, whose jobs are making art for other people, other companies. But if their style is generated for AI then those people and companies would get it for cheaper.
AI will be a great tool once it stops stealing artists their art. This is achieved either with an adjustment to the copyright law, or when AI models start paying artists to use their art. Simple.
