Torture is relative. I don't think for a minute that AI will turn all twiddly mustache on us, but running (subjectively) unbounded tests with trillions of instances (us!) would amount to pretty much the same thing. And it's not a stretch of the imagination by any means. Programmers create and then throw away large-scale simulations all the time.
