The atomic age was a hype, just like cryptocurrencies and AI. The tech bros tried to capitalise on the hype without understanding the tech. That's how we got radon toothpaste, it's how games based on hashing became monetised as scams, and it's why a "powered by AI" sticker is slapped on everything that uses pattern matching. But that doesn't mean it isn't useful. Nuclear technology has lots of applications, from X-ray imaging to atomic clocks and lasers. It doesn't have to give you radiation poisoning. Or be too expensive to meter. And blockchains are useful for money transfers, and for version control, and lots of other things. They don't have to be artificially scarce collectibles sold as a replacement for the broken property ladder. And AI isn't what people think it is either. It has nothing to do with The Forbin Project, Demon Seed, Terminator, or that Spielberg film, or Her. Actual AI has been used for decades, but nobody advertised it as such because it made people think of AM or Terminator. It is used for OCR, voice recognition, face recognition, spam filters, speech to text, voice cloning, image filters, photo and video editing, and runtime code optimization. The hype is selling it the same way computers and audio synthesisers were sold: As a way to replace human labour. Electric guitars have not replaced the string section in orchestras, as was feared by professional musicians at the beginning of the 20th century. Instead they have defined new genres of music, and audio engineer is now a profession in itself. Computers have replaced human computers, but the paperless office has grown the market for printer paper. And programmer is now a profession of its own. AI is now being sold as if it could replace the string section or the accounting department, but of course it can't. Owning a keyboard won't turn you into Mozart, and image generators won't turn you into van Gogh. They are instruments an artist can use, amazing instruments, but just like a database won't magically tell you what to do even if you feed it the relevant data and ask the right questions, AI won't be able to be creative for you.
