Sure, but there's no avoiding that. If the US puts the brakes on AI development, things don't stay the same, they get vastly and permanently worse, because countries like China will continue developing AI and take most of our economy and become world hegemons. At least if the US develops the AI, it will have its economy and can use this to take care of the population.
