I get your skepticism: I have been working on AI-adjacent research myself, and even until recently (~1 week ago) I never believed the possibility that AGI was possible in the first place. However, I delved more deeply into the research areas behind AGI, and I realized that the claims by numerous top experts in the AI field, Demis Hassibis included, that AGI was on its way, were very realistic.
Without going into too many details, researchers have figured out how to overcome several bottlenecks that would definitely have prevented AGI (for instance, the fact that there's no more new training data on the internet). Yes, there are still some new innovations that need to be made to achieve AGI, but I am not betting against AGI anymore.
The more I learned, the more I was honestly afraid that major change in society was on its way.
