This seems a silly take when compared to your car example. Cars were truly awful for decades. Loud, dangerous, uncomfortable, needed hand cranking, scared the horses who were the actual useful transport. You can see now that they had a vast benefit, though not necessarily over alternatives. There was a lot of politics in why cars developed to be used in inner cities over trams/trains, and some cities are desperately trying to unwind that now. But the point is, once they got a lot better, over decades, they fundamentally changed how we live and work.
When talking about AI replacing programmers, and everyone else, they only don't seem like a metric leap for people stuck right now thinking about an infant technology and its current teething issues, much like many people thought about cars for a decade or so. people stuck in linear thinking, as it were.
I think you know the long term potential but don't want to acknowledge it, because you know "trillions" doesn't get thrown around haphazardly by the richest companies on Earth (that is how they got there). Impressive parlour tricks don't win nobel prizes.
