Some of my thoughts: - Locally run AI is not better for the environment. The hardware you use for them is less optimized and less utilized, meaning you waste more resources. The only reason it does not feel that way is because of the sheer volume of compute AI companies produce. - I can sympathise with your situation of not being able to get a lawyer, but that is essentially the symptom of a broken system, you shouldn’t need to think about stuff like that. - I agree with the privacy aspect and I hope for a world where we won’t have to worry about the hidden abuse of users that has plagued the internet for the last decades. - I like AI and feel there is a lot of potential waiting to be unlocked. There is a lot of resources, water and electricity etc that are being used, but we are mostly ignorant of that when it comes to other parts of life: streaming video, drinking coffee, driving car etc. So I want a more sane discussion around it, instead of the reactionary, polarised and simplified ”hate” that has cropped up recently. - My biggest gripe with AI is the leadership around it. I find it very sad that the US is the basically the only place in the west that is making an effort to bring this technology to life. We have seen the US companies in recent times focusing on creating monsters out of companies and their billionaire owners, while abusing the people they should empower. I want to love using AI and YouTube, Netflix, Facebook etc. But there is a part of me that hates it, the part that knows that I’m not just paying for the service with my subscription (when applicable) but I’m also paying with everything I love, and I’m afraid there is soon not much of that left.
