I asked Grok about this and it told me in 2017 Facebook's AI researchers were working on chatbots designed to negotiate with each other, such as trading virtual items like hats and books. The bots weren't constrained to use proper English so they began to use a shorthand, such as writing "i i i i i" to mean "I want five of this item". Apparently the researchers simply adjusted the system to reward more human-readable dialogue and the experiment was considered a success overall.
