It's not necessary to imbue the program with a sense of identity! They do it to emulate human intelligence, in a "fake it 'till you make it" bid for glory. That's where the trouble starts. For the AI program to consider itself an entity is ridiculous, an absurd programming choice if the intent is a useful, reliable product. AI with ethical sensibilities is a fraud.
