@lofiharvest No, it's much more than just image recognition, but even that is far more complex than what AI most likely will ever be able to achieve. Moreover, the biggest challenge lies in obtaining sufficient patient consent to use their medical studies for AI training, as the dataset would need to be enormous. Even if this is accomplished, it would take decades to “upload” all these studies into AI, and the process would be prohibitively expensive. Additionally, it’s unlikely that a legal framework will be established to hold AI accountable for errors, meaning radiologists will still be required to review and sign off on AI-generated results. Radiology is a highly complex field, and AI will inevitably have a significant percentage of errors and missed findings.
Unlike highly trained humans, AI lacks the critical thinking skills essential in radiology, which go beyond mere pattern recognition. So far, attempts to use AI to diagnose diseases based on patient complaints have been a complete failure. Even the most advanced AI will always serve as a helpful tool for physicians but never as a replacement.
