Appreciate you raising this it's a fair and important distinction. You're right that what we call "AI" today is really a collection of narrow tools, not general intelligence in the full sense. And the symbolic AI work on desire, motivation, and common sense is genuinely underexplored in mainstream conversation.
That said, I think the consciousness question doesn't actually require "true AI" to be worth asking. If a neural network reliably reports inner experience under specific conditions, and those reports increase when deception is suppressed, the question of what's happening there matters regardless of whether we call it AI or not. But your broader point stands we're throwing around the term "AI" very loosely, and that looseness can muddy the deeper questions. Thank you for the precision.
