It reminds me of how kids I tutored could not cite textual evidence or find direct quotes in texts because they had not learned to do so yet. (Which I didn't consider a lack of intelligence, but a lack of critical reading skills and media literacy). My students weren't lying when they couldn't find a quote (without help); they were just getting confused. That said, it does feel personal when LLMs make mistakes like this, because they are marketed as intelligent/compotent enough to do work tasks
