That's true, and I agree. That piece of hardware's programmed logic is proprietary. You have the rights to the algorithms they've programmed into the effects processor, but they are likely not open source. It's a usage agreement for your purchasing it, and doing more than using it's stock functionality will void all warranty. Trying to reverse engineer their design is definitely illegal. You can buy a Zoom 505 for guitar effects, but the custom programmable effects are a proprietary feature. Now, in regards to meeting the creative requirements, you have no difficulty proving it's creatively yours because hardware effects modules will not compose anything for you.
