It's entirely possible that with enough training of data, ChatGPT (or a similar AI) could be knowledgeable enough to cite appropriate case law for lawyers. It's just that ChatGPT was given a very small window of opportunity to train and learn, and then that window closed in 2021. Because of ChatGPT's limited learning data set, it is ill equipped to be useful for fact-based advice.
Anyone using ChatGPT should always assume that any fact-like citations it offers up are, at best, unreliable or at worst, fake. Anyone relying 100% on ChatGPT by thinking it provides accurate information without performing manual verification deserves all of the ire they get.
