I will add that, while a lot of things did eventually come around, much of the predicted timelines for such things didn't exactly work out. Many thought that it would be just a few decades out, and then when it didn't come, the first AI winter soon followed.
So perhaps we could be in the same boat thinking AGI is around the corner and we run into another wall... research simply slows down for a while again... maybe...
