Hollywood stopped hiring good writers in the 90s in favor of hacks who knew how to fill in templates for scripts, like hero's journey. Hacks work cheaper and offer less resistance to script changes from unintelligent execs and money people, but those hacks were still writers. Just bad ones. So it's not just the execs' fault. Every new Hollywood writer owns a copy of "Save The Cat". If you look at the list of movies that have actually done well in the last 15 years in terms of being written well, they are either the original writer who brought the movie to a studio, the director, or someone too rich and famous for the studio to bully. Watch the award shows, however, and whenever writers get up to accept an award for Hollywood crap, it's always a team of six to ten people. Not one or two writers. Because not only are studio writers incredibly stupid, but lazy. Asking one person to write 110 pages of bottom level dialogue is apparently asking too much. It also sends a message to writers. You are just a cog in the machine. A battery in the Matrix. You can be easily replaced. And now, replaced by AI. Why bother caring for an industry that stopped caring about itself decades ago?
