This is dead on, the liability question is what's stopping this. The company shipping doesn't want the liability, the automated trucking company doesn't want the liability, and the purchaser doesn't want the liability. And that liability is a BIG deal, especially once you have the first major accident.
And if you're the sucker 'behind the wheel and in control' when it gives you back control 2 seconds before an accident, it's your ass they'll burn for it. It would need to be a lot of money just to afford the insurance you'd need to protect any property you have.
