@calebthompson9777 Well, it does matter if the car has LIDAR or is entirely reliant on cameras. LIDAR has been demonstrated over and over again to be much more accurate at detecting and identifying signs and objects around them than just using cameras.
I'm not a fan of self-driving cars. I think it's a bad idea and that it shouldn't be allowed. But all that said, it has been proven that self-driving cars with LIDAR do handle the challenges of our roads much much better than the ones that are solely reliant on cameras for navigating/mapping the environment around them.
Also, cameras are not all that great in the dark. And yes, obviously the headlights were on, so that bit directly in front of the vehicle was lit. But I also know that if I had been the driver at that intersection, I would have been able to see the surroundings much better than what we could see in that dashcam footage. That is _always_ the case with every camera out there. And humans aren't very good at seeing in the dark either.
Cameras do handle darkness better than they used to, but there are still some pretty severe limitations - and it specifically comes back to lighting every time. And the cameras being installed on cars are not the cameras designed with night vision optimized as much as it possibly could be.
I'm honestly not sure if you're defending Tesla's autopilot by comparing it to other driver assist programs or if you are actually opposed to all driver assist programs. It's extremely hard to tell from your comment.
And yeah, if it's raining so hard you can't see or if it's blizzard/white out conditions, you should pull over. I'm pretty sure that's included in every driver's ed program in the US. And I have had storms where I had to pull over because the rain was coming down so fast and heavy that I just couldn't see - and I was far from the only person doing so on that stretch of road that day.
I have also been a passenger in a blizzard before. I had Dad drive me to work because I knew that I couldn't drive in it. If he had told me that he couldn't either, then I wouldn't have gone in. But he did get me there, very slowly, but we got there. And he got back home safe as well. Although there were times when he had to roll down the window and stick his head out to make sure he was on the road. He probably shouldn't have driven me in, but it wasn't the first blizzard he's driven in and he made sure he had all the necessary supplies in the car in case he got stuck (and he took that car specifically because it was lower to the ground and heavier so it wasn't going to be blown around as much as the truck would have been).
