Nah, that’s not how it works . Just paying your friend $5 to write a song doesn’t automatically make you the copyright owner—that’s not what ‘work made for hire’ means. Under U.S. law, a work is only ‘for hire’ if:
It’s made by an employee as part of their job, or
It’s a signed, written agreement explicitly calling it a ‘work made for hire’ and falls under one of the 9 specific categories (like a contribution to a movie or a collective work).
A random commission? Not covered. Unless your friend signed a contract saying it’s a ‘work for hire’ (which most independent creators won’t), they keep the copyright and you only get the rights you agreed on.
Just paying someone doesn’t mean you own sh*t unless it’s in writing.
