@fredumstadt593 i think you're right that we tend to anthropomorphize AI, which plays a big role in how we perceive it. a system making statements in the first person surely reinforces this. however, i still think there's something inherent in language that implies agency. even without using "I" or expressing clear intent, the act of communication itself suggests some form of intention, and therefore purpose and awareness. why do they tell us, there's only 2 gb of storage left? there's obviously a technical explanation. there's also a functional explanation more from the field of human-machine-interaction and interface design. but i'm convinced there's also a psychological explanation that we need to employ to understand what the message actually means. "the system _wants_ to warn us that we're running out of space." must be part of our interpretation otherwise there's no purpose to the message. we unconsciously and unavoidably seek the "why" behind statements, which might be the reason why we project consciousness onto artefacts, even when we know it's not really there. please note i am not argiung for machine consciousness here. i'm just trying to get at the unconscious assumptions necessary for using language successfully.
