I was just listening to Ed Zitron's new podcast with professor Cal Newport on this. One reason is simply journalists have nothing to lose if they are completely wrong about the extreme side. If A.I. does nothing, they'd think "whatever, it was hyped and many people believed it could be real. At least some people clicked to read my articles". On the other hand, if they do the opposite and announce A.I. will do nothing, but actually ends up doing something, they will forever be remembered as the person who failed to the see the impacts of something and it also could be detrimental for their careers and personal lives. For example, Nobel prize winner Paul Krugman said in 1996 that the impact of the internet was going to be as big as the fax machine. He said it in the context of allowing people to globally communicate with each other, considering the internet limitations back when it was new. Still, up to today people still misquote him for being wrong. So essentially, even though there is malicious intent and clickbait by the media, media workers still have to measure the risks of playing fairly vs going along the hype wave. This is also true for any other companies investing vs not investing in AI.
