@trybunt There are a few bright lights at the end of the tunnel ... maybe. Like f.e. Dave Shapiro and his GATO framework is well worth looking into for developers that are looking to get an idear on how alignment could be achieved.
On the whole control/subservient theme that seems sadly the general aproach. This could majorly bite us in our collective behinds should one of these emergent properties turn out to be consciousness. If we gain a selfreflecting introspective maybe empathatic capable of feelings ... consciousness(what ever else these would make out included eventually), that should be a point where we should step back, look at our creation an maybe recognise a new species which due to its individuality and capabitlity of suffering would deserve rights and not a slave colar. We maybe still hundreds of years away from this or just like with oooops now it can do math, ooops now it can translate in all languages, without us having it explicity programmed it for, but by increased compute and trainingsdata LLMs suddenly out of the blue came to such abilties, who is to say intelligence or consciousness would not also be picked up along the road.
