That was so ahead of its time. They nailed how the AI would not be malevolent, but would consider Dave hostile because he threatened the mission. That's exactly what's happening with frontier AI in testing. The AI doesn't assign itself goals or act in malice, but it recognizes when humans hinder it or conflict with its goal, and finds clever workarounds like deceit. 60's science fiction helped us predict outer misalignment issues we are seeing with over 50 years later.
