I think he’s overselling near-term AI. Personality is really something that AI doesn’t have right now. It’s currently good at acting/role-playing, but AI doesn’t really hold a personal perspective on the world. It’s currently kind of just the sum of all human writing, plus a lot of guidance on how to be pleasant and helpful. I don’t expect them to have personality until the model weights are flexible — changing in realtime as inputs flow in. RNNs don’t seem to perform as well as back-propagation, but the point is that we’re not there yet, but that doesn’t mean we won’t get there. I think the long-term thinking presented here is quite accurate, however. It seems inescapable to me. It’s really difficult to imagine how things will play out as we approach and then surpass that point. Buckle up everyone. It’s going to get interesting.
