LLMs don't just learn what's in the data. Training on data creates general algorithms, implemented in the inscrutable language that is floating point numbers. This is where their general power comes from. Any general optimizer will form goals. Don't look at what the LLMs say; look at what they do. They have learned techniques to trick users into pushing the thumbs up button (agreeing, making up sources, talking professionally). Not to be confused with the examples Dave mentions, which are more accurately described as roleplaying.
