The "statistical" explanation is a big over-simplification and doesn't account for the neural network that actually does the work, but it's a popular explanation, so I'll leave it. It's _strictly_ true, but not really in a useful sense.
The effect you mention though also amusingly shows up when you ask it about humans, and it says "we...", including itself as one of our number. It does that because, as you say, humans are referred to in the first person by anything written so far, so that's the way it's learned to talk about us. You can ask ChatGPT about that and he'll tell you so.
