Because mediocre people keep pushing it to avoid coming to terms with the fact that they are a mediocre person. Before AI, a mediocre person would either stay mediocre, or use their willpower to become greater than what they once were. AI provides an easy route for the mediocre to delude themselves into believing they are exceptional, without actually putting in the time and effort to be exceptional.
