Honestly in my own personal opinion, we don't need to worry about AI because we're already killing ourselves. Climate Change and all that plus the fact we have yet to divest our primal notions of those who don't look like us must therefore be hostile.
Still, I say your theory about AI is based on the assumption we let it go unsupervised. Your hypothetical AI sounds more akin to Ultron than anything. (The comics for reference not the MCU though it's possible it would draw such a conclusion).
