Robber barons is exactly it. Once wealth gets to a certain level, especially in the US but also around the world, the owners of that wealth begin to feel "invincible". Basically, anything they order can and will get done, and they're surrounded by people hoping to leech a little of that wealth by making _sure_ it gets done. They lose touch with reality and consequences. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely".
As an example, in 1933 the heirs of the _first_ round of robber barons, tried to fund and back a fascist takeover of the US government (the Wall St. Putsch). And when it was revealed and shut down by the man they tried to bribe to do it... none of them suffered any consequence.
They don't realize simple things, like "hey if you eliminate the working middle class by underpaying them and replacing them with automation, there'll be *nobody left* who can afford to buy your products and services". They think they can just loot the economy blind, then "order" somebody to fix it. All that really matters is adding more billions to the pile, and once they have enough billions all the problems will go away.
Sadly, the world doesn't work that way. Reality comes back to bite them in the ass. Usually by some form of revolution which ends up wiping out the wealth (and in most cases, the lives) of the superrich.
