Their tools still exist in very real physical spaces where its processing occurs. They are intentionally built in the midst of suburbs where resources exist, because those behind using these 'AI' tools know that competing powers want to destroy them as well and have planned to literally use the middle class as both scapegoats and meat shields to protect this weird cheap cash grab gimmick. Don't suppose they have planned for carrington level solar cycles though, so unfortunately there is another angle to consider about the 'dark time' you mention
