The fun thing about this is that if they are a little bit conscious, the text they produce may not be (and I would say probably isn’t) directly expressing that consciousness the same way human language production does — it might be like something to be a chatbot, but it’s probably nothing like chatting. As in, if it says it’s conscious or not, or says anything at all, even if there’s some experience going on in there, it’s probably not like “thinking” these things and then saying them.
