"Ai can do all sorts of useful things which no person is capable of"
Look at what people are pushing Ai to be used for the most. As a substitute to drawing, painting, writing, and artists in general. it is literally being used to try and push one of the most disrespected professions in corporate america out of being able to profit off their own work, by giving the suits a workaround, practically scalper technology that does the work for cheap, and does it badly, using the stolen works of the exact people they don't want to actually pay in order to function.
Stuff that Ai is actually useful for, like doing the jobs of ceos and middle managers more efficiently, or detecting sickle cell cancer early on, is actual good use of ai that it is not being applied to, because that is either against the interests of managers or working to cure cancer which tech bros think is less important than stealing your kid's eagerness to pin a drawing to the fridge or something.
"Ai is impacting many industries"
No it is not. Ai is just being pushed into literally everything possible, whether it needs it or not, because it makes the company look cutting edge. Just like what happened with NFTs. Here's the cycle:
1:Tech bros claim a new technology that hastens global warming is the future, pitching it to severely out of touch donors.
2: Tech bros get funding from people who don't understand how wifi works and start using this new tech to monetize and monopolize something that doesn't need to or should not be commodified the way they are doing it. in order squeeze money out of people.
3: The scam doesn't work right, companies start pushing this tech into literally everything in an effort to make it succeed on name brand recognition and nothing else and turn a profit, ruining their services and products in the process (re: google putting inaccurate ai generated results in their top search results, which helps no one)
4: tech falls to irrelevancy and starts getting applied to actual constructive ends now that tech bros aren't trying to use it as a get rich quick scheme.
5: repeat.
"We don't need cars but you still see those"
Ai generated images are not cars. Cars are a mode of transportation, which is something people have always needed and will always need. I wish we had less expensive, more publicly funded transportation, but cars are what we have in the US right now.
The need for transportation is not the same as the need for art. Art is not something we have ever done because we *needed* to. Art is something we have always done because we *wanted* to.
Making art has always been a part of the process of enjoying it, and the amount of enjoyment the artist gets out of *making* the art will always affect the amount of enjoyment other people get out of *seeing* or *hearing* the art.
automating the process of making art, doesn't improve art. it's not an advancement over the regular means of making art, the way that cars are an advancement over just walking to work, because what cars do is they get you further faster. and that is only an improvement because the goal of transportation is to get somewhere else, usually within a relatively short time. "Making art faster" doesn't improve art. because "making a bunch of images quickly" is not the goal of art. the goal of art is to enjoy art. ai generation takes away that enjoyment.
