@majestic8326 It’s theoretically possible to separate intelligence from volition. Imagine a being that could solve any problem put to it with superhuman intelligence, but that was entirely passive and formulated no problems of its own. (Obviously nothing like that would evolve; it would have to be built, and if you could build that you'd only find it useful as an agent if you also gave it volition.)
It’s harder to see how consciousness could exist without volition, as consciousness seems to originate in the continual self-diagnostic routine – checking “is everything working properly?” and getting the Cartesian response “sum”.
Of course, none of this discussion is about "AI in its current form"...
