Or more. There's a very real possibility that self driving cars aren't safer in large numbers. Human driving is intuitive and predictable to humans. Change that to cars with a "brain" and bizarre and unpredictable behaviors may emerge. Then ask that vehicle to interact in an ecosystem with potentially dozens of coding sets and humans and do so intelligently and safely.
The idea that is simple is, frankly, a scientists pipe dream. Most engineers will recognize the actually difficulties because we deal with poorly optimized legacy crap all the time.
