PS I asked Gemini this question, and it came back with largely BS or red herring answers. I'm not asking why AI can't write the "perfect" multi-architecture optimizing C++ compiler. I'm asking why AI can't write *an implementation* of a multi-architecture optimizing C++ compiler, maybe even one that leaves out key features. In fact, let's simplify the problem and focus on a C language compiler, which a human can create in less than 10,000 lines of source code, because the rules for C are combinatorically simpler, with much less wiggle room for interpretation. There are several suites of extensive conformance tests, so AI could successively refine implementtation until all conformance tests pass.
