Well, the idea isn't to have your own fully autonomous car. It's for them to be essentially taxi services. The cars don't need breaks for anything more than a recharge/refuel and the ocassional bit of maintenance, so... large enough fleet of them replaces every single car in the whole city. Even larger, and you could replace every car in the country. In the continent even. You'd be paying per-trip for a taxi service rather than driving yourself to work and then leaving the car in the lot for 8 or so hours only to drive it home and let it sit in your driveway for the next 16 or so hours and all that time paying for license and registration and property taxes on a vehicle you don't actually drive that many miles in per day. Same concept as taxi services.
